One brief conversation early in my real estate career taught me a lesson that has profoundly shaped both my professional journey and my approach to life. This lesson has not only deepened my relationship with my children but also led to a successful and fulfilling career.
“Hi, this is Kimberly Yates. Are you still planning to make our appointment today?”
“No, sorry. We viewed a home last night and made an offer. We are now under contract.”
When I became a licensed REALTOR® in 2006, it was at the onset of the recession. After many years in management for Federated Department Stores and a high-end jeweler, I felt it was time for a significant change. Having had twins in 2002 and spending their first year at home, I was ready to return to work but needed the flexibility my previous career couldn’t offer. Real estate seemed perfect, combining my love for client interaction with the chance to build something of my own.
The conversation above was about one of my very first listings. I scheduled a showing for the following morning instead of that evening. Real estate can change rapidly, and I learned that the hard way. From that moment, I understood the importance of seizing opportunities immediately, adapting even when it wasn’t convenient or easy.
This experience taught me that opportunities must be acted on quickly to avoid losing them. The effort we put in often comes back as results. I adapted by bringing my twins along when I didn't have childcare. They rode with me, witnessing my journey and becoming two of my biggest supporters. I did sell that listing, just not to that specific buyer. I learned never to wait to fulfill my commitment to my clients.
Balancing work with raising two toddlers was challenging and emotional, but immensely rewarding. I was determined to succeed and did whatever it took. Success followed, leading me to open my own brokerage in 2017. I am incredibly proud of my children and our relationship, which has grown stronger through our shared experiences. Both have now finished College and are alongside me at my Brokerage as Licensed Real Estate Agents.
People often ask how I balance everything. For me, integrity is key—I won’t let my work or children fall by the wayside. It’s about keeping my word and adjusting as needed. I hold myself accountable and strive to do my best in every endeavor. My clients got to know my children early on, and I’ve continued to grow and adapt with each new experience.
Meeting new people and helping them achieve their real estate dreams is my favorite part of being a REALTOR®. My brokerage offers the benefits and services of a large office with the personalized attention of an individual agent. We support you at every step, from REITs to property management and beyond, ensuring you receive the best service possible. Our commitment extends beyond transactions through property and community management.
I opened my brokerage to have more control over how I help my clients reach their goals, driving constant innovation and improvement. Once your transaction is complete, I will continue to be there as your lifelong REALTOR®.
Warm regards,
Kimberly Yates
